Midwives Model of Care™ Is Woman-Centered

The Midwives Model of Care™ is a fundamentally different approach to pregnancy and childbirth than contemporary obstetrics. Midwifery care is uniquely nurturing, hands-on care before, during, and after birth. Midwives are health care professionals specializing in pregnancy and childbirth who develop a trusting relationship with their clients, which results in confident, supported labor and birth. While there are different types of midwives practicing in various settings, all midwives are trained to provide comprehensive prenatal care and education, guide labor and birth, address complications, and care for newborns. The Midwives Model of Care™ is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events. The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
  • providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • minimizing technological interventions and
  • identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.

The application of this model has been proven to reduce to incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

"There are a few times in your life when you really miss your mama.  One of those is when you are actually becoming a mama yourself.  Everyone is different and for some, perhaps solitude is more enjoyable when you're experiencing the particular poignancy of childbirth.  Myself- I prefer to surround myself with those who know the ropes and can empathize with me!  So I always invite family along--and sometimes unexpected friends pop in as well.  I asked my sisters to attend my latest birth but one couldn't make it.  I pilfered the lovely Mrs. Tanya Green from my sister's friend list and she agreed to come support me.  The moon must have been just right because Tanya came fresh from another birth and I'm sure she was exhausted!  Even though I can't remember much of the experience, I remember always feeling such peace and comfort knowing she was there brightening the room with her sweet smile.  After 4 boys of her own, she was as excited as I was to welcome Scarlett Ransom on March 1st, 2013.  She helped create an atmosphere of soothing calm.  I appreciate her flexibility so much and she has continued to be my go-to gal for odd medical questions and PPD(postpartum depression) issues.  Tanya is a sparkling, vivacious jewel set in a heart of gold and I know you'll treasure having her in your birth story as much as I did."

"Tanya was such a gentle encouragement and loving presence through my last labor and home water birth.  We call her my daughter's "first friend" because she is such a special part of our memories that 'birthday'."

"In October 2013, I had an unexpected C-section with my fifth child. Unfortunately, the anesthesiologist "missed" several times while administering the epidural. This resulted in a spinal fluid leak, which led to horrible head, neck and shoulder pain. Tanya accompanied my husband and me to the emergency room twice. The first time was an attempt to get some relief from the pain; the second time was by ambulance because my blood pressure was severely elevated from the pain of the migraines. I was experiencing blindness and weakness in my left hand. I was diagnosed with Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome. Throughout all of this, Tanya was by my side. I cannot adequately express what it meant to my husband and me to know that we could call Tanya day or night (and we did!). She also monitored my blood pressure readings daily for a couple of months postpartum. Her experience as an R.N., mother, and more importantly as a friend, was comforting to us as we walked through this uncertain time.  Even now, an entire year later, I cannot type this without shedding some grateful tears! Tanya is a true gem!"
